STAR STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) are a series of courses that help students move from high school to a tertiary provider, like a polytechnic. These courses run during the school holidays, normally for one week and are applied for through your high school careers advisor.
This programme is designed to give secondary school students an introduction to the theory and practice of studio recording and mixing.
Students will acquire the skills to operate small and medium sized recording equipment within operational specifications.

Core Elements
History of recording technology, sequencing, hard disk recording, gain structure, sound theory, sound perception and measurement, mixing console operation, studio personnel and microphone placement/technique.
The student will learn the practical skills involved in operating a recording studio and software recording programmes. Over the course of four days each student will participate in the recording of other students, culminating in a CD of all the student projects done in the week.
The programme can lead to full time study in the areas of:
- Audio Engineering and Music Production
- Live Sound
- Contemporary Music Performance

Core Elements
Microphones, mixing consoles, equalisation, amplifiers, stage management, loudspeakers and crossovers, backline equipment, compressors and noise gates, sound wave theory and effects, live mixing.
The student will learn the practical skills involved in setting up and operating a sound system. On the final day of the programme the students will provide production for a performance by a musical group.
The programme can lead to full time study in the areas of:
- Live sound and Event Production
- Audio Engineering and Music Production
- Contemporary Music Performance
- Music Event Management

- The personnel associated with lighting systems and productions
Unit Standard that students will be working towards:

Entry Criteria
This course is suited for students who are already involved in production lighting.
